Why Does it Not Exist in Some Societies? We call this the Age of Depression, and for good reason. The prevalence of so-called clinical depression has increased ten-fold over the past half century, afflicting younger and younger populations and exacting a massive cost to society at all levels. As with many other disorders in the West, there has been a profit-driven tendency to medicalize the cause of depression, and even to blame it on highly specific genes, such as the 5-HTT ‘depression gene.’ While this suits the pharmaceutical industry to a tee, it distorts the true picture and prompts people
