What Works, and What Doesn’t in the Battle Against the Blues It’s a confusing time to suffer from depression. While psychiatrists fill opinion pages to debate diagnoses and the relative values of psychoactive drugs and placebos, 121 million people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, must deal with the debilitating effects of what some have called the “black dog” of depression.
